Why Bumble + Spark
Most of my life I have been bumbling along, trying, failing, trying again, wondering, doubting, figuring. Bumbling is part of life. Bees bumble. I bumble. We all bumble. Once in awhile, I spark. You know that feeling when things are lined up, like you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing in the world, when your best self rises? Those are sweet, delicious moments, like bees finding nectar in a flower. Starting Bumble + Spark was a big spark for me. I knew nothing about starting a business, but I believe in organic products, taking care of our bodies, and doing what I can to be environmentally conscious.
After my son was born my half-hearted efforts to live an eco-friendly lifestyle became much more concerted. The connections between what we do everyday, the choices we make, and the health of each of us and our planet came more into focus. Our kids thrive in a healthy world. We all do!
Our organic deodorant recipe—the beginning of Bumble + Spark
A friend gave me a jar of her homemade organic deodorant when my son was still toddling around and banging pots on the kitchen floor. I experimented with the recipe over several years, between moves, my son starting school, and me pondering what was next. Of course I wanted a deodorant that was effective, but I also wanted to strike a balance between the absorbing powders, the moisturizing butters and oils, and the holding beeswax. Too much powder and it became gritty; too much oil and it became goopy; too much beeswax and it became solid.
So I made batch after batch, took notes, asked for opinions, and kept trying. During this time I discovered essential oils. Their smells are incredible and I found using them could lead to healthful shifts—a headache eased, a sore throat gone, or a mood lifted. I started playing around with combinations of scents in the deodorants and suddenly realized I had a product I very much believed in for its effectiveness and high quality. Could I actually bring it to market? Doubt and fear subsided enough and courage and deciding sparked! With support and encouragement from friends and family (including friends at Harmony Graphic & Web Design who made this website), Bumble + Spark emerged.
The creating has continued with a hand + body balm and with more natural body care products in the works.

Bumble + Spark’s organic deodorant ingredients: organic shea butter, organic arrowroot powder, organic cocoa butter, organic coconut oil, and organic essential oils
Additional ingredients: baking soda* and locally-sourced beeswax
*baking soda is always aluminum free
Why is our deodorant in a jar? How is it applied?
Bumble + Spark tries to minimize the use of plastics by using glass jars. (We are testing other vessels that are even more eco-friendly!) To lower waste, we purposely do not include a plastic or wooden stick for scooping the deodorant from the jars. Use your finger—it will be happy to be useful! Scoop a very small amount of deodorant—the size of a small pea or lentil—to apply underarm. If this is a new experience for you, you may be a bit apprehensive. Change can be uncomfortable! If using a finger simply isn’t for you, try using a small cloth to apply the deodorant.
